UST’s private 5G network solution helped Indian car manufacturer increase production efficiency by 20%

UST helped an Indian automotive manufacturer replace its legacy Wi-Fi system with a private 5G network solution in its production facilities. Now, the company has high-speed, low-latency connectivity, enabling real-time data exchange between manufacturing systems. The enhanced network connectivity increased production efficiency by 20% and cut equipment downtime by 15%, improving product quality and customer satisfaction.

OUR CLIENT

Founded more than 40 years ago, this automotive manufacturer commands nearly half of the passenger car market in India and generates nearly ₹150,00 crore (US$20 billion) annually. That success is attributed to the company’s commitment to innovation and efforts to keep pace with evolving customer preferences.

THE CHALLENGE

Legacy network infrastructure negatively impacted operational efficiency and productivity

The company struggled with reliable network connectivity across its two sprawling manufacturing facilities. Its legacy Wi-Fi networks couldn’t adequately support the increasing number of connected devices and real-time applications, hindering production efficiency and quality control. The auto manufacturer needed to install a reliable, secure network solution to support critical operations, such as real-time data exchange between machines, the control and monitoring of automated guided vehicles (AGVs), and machine-to-machine communications. The new network infrastructure solution needed to integrate with existing technologies seamlessly.

THE TRANSFORMATION

Automotive industry digital transformation—private 5G network integration with IT infrastructure

UST implemented a private 5G technology network within the client’s manufacturing facilities that seamlessly integrated with the company’s existing IT infrastructure. The solution leveraged core in-box technology for the access management function (AMF) to store and manage subscriber data and the user plane function (UPF) to forward user data between devices and the network. The solution also utilized remote radio unit (RRU) and baseband unit (BBU) technologies to provide robust radio access capabilities.

Now, the automotive manufacturing industry leader enjoys high-speed, low-latency network connectivity, enabling real-time data exchange between machines and manufacturing systems for optimized production workflows. The private 5G network also reduced production line downtime thanks to real-time equipment monitoring and predictive maintenance.

THE IMPACT

Improving production efficiency with 5G and setting the stage for industry 4.0 innovation

After a successful 5G network deployment, the Indian manufacturer has laid the foundation for innovative industry 4.0 and smart factory technologies to help maintain its competitive advantage. The company achieved these impressive results:
