Case Study
UST enhances network coverage by 100% for a large U.S. telco through streamlined small cell deployment services
OUR CLIENT
The client is a prominent wireless network operator in the United States known for its extensive 5G network, competitive pricing, and customer-centric approach. The company provides a range of voice, messaging, data services, and high-speed connectivity to millions of customers nationwide.
THE CHALLENGE
Overcoming stalled small cell deployment
The client faced challenges with accelerating small cell network deployment in the Detroit, MI market, since only a small percentage of several hundred nodes had been activated since 2020. They needed a partner to take over a stalled small cell deployment project and improve data accuracy and reporting for the client’s analytics platform. The latter focuses on building and deploying network infrastructure and strategically placing small cell nodes to enhance coverage and capacity.
The client also wanted help streamlining materials delivery and site construction processes because re-engaging general contractors (GCs) and defining the project scope were essential to overcome the delays and inefficiencies. Furthermore, the client required support for an additional small cell project in conjunction with a communications infrastructure provider.
THE TRANSFORMATION
Detroit end-to-end small cell program accelerated network expansion
UST implemented the Detroit end-to-end (E2E) small cell program service. This initiative successfully completed the construction of several hundred small cells within a year, substantially increasing on-air small cells and improving the hub completion rate, with two hubs relocated to more favorable locations.
The program implemented standardized procedures for reporting and milestone management on the client’s analytics platform. Through daily oversight and regular collaboration with the market location agreement (MLA) partner, the team ensured timely forecast updates and addressed approaching milestones. To expedite site evaluations, UST deployed its radio frequency team for rapid site surveys in conjunction with the MLA.
As a result, the client can now streamline the process of getting materials to market and has successfully re-engaged with GCs while redefining the scope of work to complete the project.
THE IMPACT
Achieving the 100% deployment target through streamlined processes and enhanced collaboration
Implementing the Detroit E2E small cell program led to these impressive results:
- Achieved 100% market target for small cell deployment—significantly enhancing network coverage and capacity for customers
- Completed several hundred new cells within a year—increasing on-air small cells from dozens to hundreds, demonstrating rapid deployment efficiency
- Streamlined logistics and construction processes—ensuring efficient material delivery and site completion
- Enhanced collaboration and accountability with GC and MLA partners—fostering a more cohesive and responsive deployment effort
- Improved the hub completion rate—providing more reliable and expansive network coverage for customers
