Case Study
Automated QA testing improves application performance and reduces testing time for large healthcare purchasing organization
OUR CLIENT
Our client, one of the nation's largest healthcare purchasing organizations, provides group purchasing aggregation and performance improvements for its members. It serves more than 1,600 hospitals and health systems and over 55,000 locations nationwide, including ambulatory surgery centers, physician practices, long-term care, and alternate care sites.
The client operated in a complex technical environment with more than 12 integrated systems linked by more than 10 business units. Under this legacy system, the organization could not develop and maintain third-party applications in today’s modern DevOps environment nor take advantage of software and IT operations to shorten application development lifecycles.
THE CHALLENGE
Digital transformation ignited need to automate QA testing across disparate systems and business units
As part of its digital transformation strategy, the client needed to move from a completely manual, time-consuming legacy quality assurance (QA) testing solution to an off-the-shelf, configurable, and customizable system that could be automated and accessed companywide.
THE TRANSFORMATION
New automated QA testing system provided flexibility and scalability to support zero manual input and full growth potential
UST Xpanxion designed a configurable framework to fully automate QA testing that could flow across various client systems, business units, websites, and applications. The system was designed with the open-source, Selenium-based portable framework, providing the flexibility and scalability needed to meet the quick and reliable QA testing requirements of today’s modern DevOps environments and uphold the continuous delivery workflow.
UST Xpanxion also developed an approach to change management and training to ensure a successful transition to the new systems including custom development, internal IT development, and cross-team dependencies. Our team identified and documented integration points with critical internal and third-party systems, filling gaps in system functionality with customized systems, and created the processes necessary to ensure a smooth system transition and organizational transformation.
THE IMPACT
Fully automated QA testing system improved performance while reducing testing time
This solution took the client from little to no automation testing across several critical apps to more than 80% automation within the first year. Within two years, full automation was implemented across the entire application landscape.
- Reduced run time by 40%—from 30 to four hours
- Reduced testing time from approximately 56,000 hours to 16 hours at 100% coverage and 99.97% accuracy
- Achieved 100% automation within 24 months
